About us

From the very beginning PRK Designs has been a work-in-progress... as it will forever remain. With a degree in Interior Architecture, I began working with residential clients 14 years ago which was some of the most challenging work (on many levels) that I have ever done!  As much as I loved the design process, the area that most frustrated me was entrusting my designs to others for execution. Too frequently I was disappointed in, and forced to accept, the result of a particular aspect of a project due to the manner in which it was executed. I found myself seeking other creative endeavors "on the side" to fulfill my increasing desire for a totally "hands on" creative experience in which I could control every aspect of actualization.

I learned to sew as a child from my Mother and, as a result, have been around yardage stores and fabrics since I can remember. My mother made my clothes until I was old enough to start making my own... a skill that has served me well. In my twenties, I was married to a dental student and lived in Chicago and, when I was not working, I sewed. At the time, already well-versed in embroidery and crochet, I decided to learn to knit... the next logical step (to me).

With the rigors of life and the onset of motherhood, I continued to sew while everything else was put on hold. Years later, my sister and I started a retail business in table linens and, after realizing that I was creatively unfulfilled, decided to go back to school. Five years later with a degree in Interior Design, I was ready to take on any design challenge while still not realizing that creating with my own hands was to be my true destiny.

Three years ago I returned to knitting and realized that many of the principles I learned in design school directly translated to this rekindled pursuit. Now, I couldn't be happier utilizing my design education in concert with my intuitive/creative side to produce beautiful art... with my own hands!

Although, at present, my lines (Collections) are all about beautiful art to wear, I have been formulating many exciting ideas for pieces in the home decor area. In this endeavor, I look forward to challenging myself with new techniques, incorporating different and innovative yarn and fabric, and continuing my exploration of color, texture, and form to create art that may grace the body... AND the home!

Pamela Kermgard on Design E-mail

Pam KermgardIn my experience, design is always an ongoing, ever-evolving endeavor; never static, and never "finished." The process is a continuous challenge; a conundrum to ponder; to "know" when to stop… when enough is enough… when I've achieved the "end" that was apparent upon commencement but, during its realization, takes on its own "personality," growing… becoming… changing... maturing!

As with any art form, your choice of fiber art should "speak" to you. It may attract you on a subliminal, almost spiritual level, and engage your intellect as would your best friend or favorite activity. When you wear art, it should intimately "connect" with your psyche and provide expression to the subtleties of your character; it should energize and emphasize your personality.

When "wearable art" resonates your individuality and accentuates your charm, reveals your charisma, it's right for you! If, on the other hand, it makes you feel even slight discomfort, or otherwise subtracts from your being, then it's definitely NOT right for you! In my opinion (notwithstanding my obvious prejudice), wearable art, by its very definition, is the most intimate, personal piece of art you can own.

Conversely, there are those who love my "one of a kind" pieces but, instead of wearing them, display them as a focal decoration on a wall to complete, or to provide a basis color pallet for, their home or office decor.

I create many pieces that are vibrant with color and texture. Because of my passion for color and fiber, and the consummate delight I experience in creating beautiful, timeless wraps and accessories, I produce a wide variety of pieces that are entirely different. Some of my works may subtly enhance your existing wardrobe (or inspire new directions) and others are exclusively "show pieces," to be displayed as art instead of being worn… you decide! My inspiration comes from many different sources; nature, fine art, architecture, photography… a snippet of yarn, fabric, or a unique or particularly vibrant hue can instantly ignite my creative zeal!
